Social Media Marketing, Bookmarking & Networking

The term social media marketing is used to cover what's generally referred to as social networking and also social bookmarking.

Many people refer to social networking as a fashion and to some extent it may well be but it does have a business relevance to it also. Especially when it comes to raising the awareness of your business website.

When promoting a website, the number of links to your site has an effect on how the search engines view your site. In other words the more links into your site the more that your site is seen to be important and of interest to other readers, this in turn builds more interest and hopefully at the end of the day, more site visitors.

So for example, if you have a Facebook page and you put up a links to all your favorite websites, your are actively promoting those sites by giving them a link. Turn this on it's head and you can use all these social media marketing sites to promote your own site by setting up your own page and actively promoting your own site.

Of course you alone are not going to “fool Google” but the point is that as your friends and family view your Facebook page and see what your interested in, they two will view your business site and hopefully put up a link too – in essence it's word of mouth over the internet.

You can more actively promote your site by sending messages through the Facebook, join groups of like minded people etc. and so include a link to your site (maybe in your signature). The same principle applies to using Twitter.

Clearly this isn't an overnight revolution but it should be an active part of how you market your business.
