Six Degrees Of Separation

Six degrees of separation is also know as “six apart” or “small world phenomenon”. It refers to the theory that anyone in the world can be connected to any other person in the world through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries.

Although the Six Apart theory hasn’t been proved conclusively it is generally accepted that with the communications systems we have such as the internet we live in a ‘shrinking world’ where connectedness between people is ever increasing with distance providing no barriers.

So what has this got to do with networking and increasing your business? Well if you are only a maximum of six steps away from anyone, if you know who you want to connect with then by networking effectively you can gain access to anyone you want to.

Tips

• Identify who you want to connect with
• Expand your network to increase your chances of connecting with who you want to connect with
• Do not dismiss anyone immediately just because they do not appear directly to provide you with the opportunities that you are seeking – they may be able to connect you to others who can provide these opportunities or help you.
